Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site
As the oldest continuously operating trading post on the Navajo Reservation, Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site offers the visitor a chance to experience a piece of history. The trading post was purchased by John Lorenzo Hubbell in 1878, and the Hubbell family operated the post until it was sold to the National Park Service in 1967. The trading post is still active, and operated by a non-profit organization that maintains the trading traditions the Hubbell family established. The site consists of the original 160 acre homestead, with the trading post, family home and visitor center as the primary attractions. In late August, the “Friends of Hubbell” and the National Park Service hold an “Old Time Trading Days” event. Entertainment such as storytellers, singers and trick roping is available. Artists include painters, wood carvers and basket makers. Food booths offer Navajo tacos and Hopi bread. Special programs such as rug talks and grounds tours are offered throughout the day. Call the park for specific dates and times of the events (928) 755-3475, or by e-mail.
