Laura Hoskins Hubbell Family
Posted 10/06/03

The Hubbell House on Van CleefLake, Seneca Falls, NY

Charles Hoskins, Daniel Southwick Hubbell, Daniel's oldest son, and Laura Hoskins Hubbell, wife of Wolcott S. B. Hubbell,  c. 1895.  Laura's father, Charles Hoskins, was one of the male signers of the Declaration of Sentiments, which began the Women's Rights Movement in Seneca Falls, NY.
Son, Daniel Southwick Hubbell ~ c. mid-1880s
Daughter, Francis Mary Livingston Hubbell ~ c. 1877, c. 1883, c. 1886.

Slate writing tablet that found beneath the attic floor boards at the Hubbell House, measures 8 1/4" x 5 1/8".  It has four slate plates.  Front cover has  "Hubbell" scratched across the top.  The front cover reads:  "Noiseless & Durable ~ Moisture Proof Tablet Slate ~ No. 2 ~ American Table Mfg. Co. 29 Brattle Street Boston."  There is more impressed print along the bottom including the date of 1872. Belonged to James Platt Hubbell; he practiced
writing his name over and over.  In addition, there are still some algebraic
equations still visible.

Journal found inside the wainscoting in the kitchen, measures 12 1/2" x 7 1/2", belonged to Daniel Southwick Hubbell. Title page reads: " D. S. Hubbell ~ Oct. 17th 1972 ~ Seneca Falls, NY Record Book ~ D. S. Hubbell ~ Sept 31st 1872." Daniel practiced his signature multiple times on the page.  In addition, on this page you will also see the signature of his brother, C. W. Hubbell (near the top).  Another page in the book has the signature of his sister, F. M. Hubbell. The original intention of the book was to document all the heads of states though out the world.  You'll notice for the United States that the President was Ulysses Grant and the Vice-president was Henry Wilson ~ 1873. Apparently after Daniel was through with the book, his sister Fanny (Francis) took possession and proceeded to use parts of the book to keep game scores.

Clara Price Hubbell Steppe

Can anyone place this woman? Jean Spradlin-Miller (cagney@bellsouth.net) is trying to confirm that her grandmother, Mittie Hubbell Spradlin, is a member of this family. She writes, "My grandmother told us it was her aunt Clara Steppe. I know that there is a Clara Price Hubbell Steppe listed in the Additions and Revisions to the History & Genealogy of the Hubbell Family. (She is number 3976.) She is listed as the sister of the man who I think is my great-grandfather, Truman Mallory Hubbell (number 3978). If you could put the photo on the Hubbell web site, maybe someone would be able to confirm her identity, and write me. I would appreciate it."

Canadian Hubbell Picnic
7-98

Annual Hubbell picnic held in Campbellford, Ontario, Canada on July 19th. Over 100 descendants of United Empire Loyalists, Nehemiah Hubbell, and his wife, Lucretia Welton, attended the event. The first photo shows the Hub's eating their lunch and the second shows the registration area.

Mantorville Plaque Dedication

Gathering of Hubbells for Mantorville Plaque dedication in August 1998.

Here's the plaque!

These are the officers and members who were present when THFHS was founded in 1981.

Katelyn Rose Hubbell
10-98

Katelyn Rose Hubbell is just 5 years old and has life-threatening aplastic anemia, a bone-marrow disease. Here's what she looked like as a normal child just before the disease was diagnosed. And now chemo treatments have resulted in a new look.

Rock Church
10-98

For some years recently, and certainly over many centuries, the ancient church of SS. Peter & Paul in Rock, Worcestershire, England, has been undergoing important maintenance and repairs. This stone church was where our immigrant ancestor Richard Hubball and his family worshipped.

We thought our readers would be interested to see these pictures of the current project of Summer-Autumn 1998-- extensive work being done on the church's west tower and the adjacent walls. Barbara Makepeace, Rock resident and THFHS friend, sent these photos to Harold B. Hubbell, Hubbell Center President. She is especially known to those members who have taken the Society-sponsored trips to England. Barbara is the "spark-plug" of Friends of Rock Church, the organization overseeing church programming. Religious services and other parish activities are continuing during the period of repairs.

This ancient structure, begun in 1086 A.D., requires constant attention if it is to continue to withstand the effects of age and climate. Fortunately, contributions from local residents of the area, together with some funding from the British government, have enabled such critically important basic jobs to be undertaken. THFHS has also contributed over the years, and members can be proud of sharing in works that began almost a thousand years ago when our ancestors lived in Rock. This is a view of the village of Rock, as seen from the church tower.
