2005 INDUCTEES ~
At
the 12th Biennial Reunion in Albuquerque, New Mexico, four individuals
were inducted into The Hubbell Family
Historical Society Hall of Fame making a total of twelve inductees. An engraved
plaque was presented to each at the general membership meeting on June 30, 2005. A framed
certificate duplicating the plaque will be also be placed in Hubbell
Center Library-Museum-Archive. This year's four inductees are:
Jack Jerome Hubbell (A&R, #10601), is a
"Proud to be a Hubbell" Member of THFHS, being involved since its
early days. For many years Jack provided the "home" mailing address
for the Society at his Springfield, Missouri, business. Jack was a
Founder and President of Hubbell Center, our Library-Museum-Archive,
located in Des Moines, IA. He has served on the Membership,
Finance, and Program Committees, acting as chair for the 1999 Biennial
Reunion in Springfield. He donated copies of the 1995 Additions
& Revisions to History and Genealogy of the Hubbell Family to
libraries located in the US and Canada. He has loaned artifacts
from his personal collection of Hubbell memorabilia for display at
reunions, and has donated multiple artifacts to Hubbell Center. He
led the initiative to place a replica of the Hubble Space Telescope at
the Marshfield Missouri Courthouse and present a commemorative plaque to
the Webster County Historical Society to honor Marshfield native,
astronomer Edwin Powell Hubble. Jack recently supported and funded
the designation of a section of Interstate 44 in Webster County as "The
Edwin P. Hubbell Memorial Highway."
James Windsor Hubbell, Jr. (A&R,
#11172), is a Participating Member of THFHS, also one of the Society's
early members. Currently serving as President of
Hubbell Center Library-Museum-Archive, Jim is
a Founding Member of the Hubbell Center Standing Committee. His
philanthropy provided for the inception of Hubbell Center in Des Moines,
Iowa, constituting an unique Museum, Library, and Archive for the
Hubbell Family in North America. He has remained a steadfast and
generous supporter of Hubbell Center, furthering its mission as a focal
point for the Society and its dedication to the collection and
preservation of items relating to the Hubbell, Hubble, Hubbel, Hubel and
Huble families descended from Richard Hubball, our English ancestor.
Jean Norford Hubbell (wife of John Howard
Hubbell A&R, #8668), is a Participating Member of THFHS and has
provided an exemplary level of service as THFHS Recording Secretary
beginning
fourteen years ago-- our longest serving Officer. Also an early member
of the Society, Jean has been a staunch supporter and active participant
of THFHS. She has served on the Membership Committee. She is
known and admired as a reliable resource person for procedural matters
in THFHS relating to the Society Bylaws, voting processes, and of
course, as recorder of the minutes for Membership and Board Meetings.
Jean also plays the role of the heart of THFHS, establishing "The Caring
Society" program as a means for the expression of condolences and
get-well wishes to members. Jean remains an outstanding example of
leadership and commitment to the Society over many years.
R. Leroy Hubble (A&R, #11405), is a
"Proud to be a Hubble" Member of THFHS, a founding member and served
as the Society's second President. As a Society Director, Leroy
instituted the Hubbell Hall of Fame and the "Proud to be a
Hubbell/Hubble" level of THFHS membership. Leroy's efforts
increased Society membership through marketing and his own personal
philanthropy in the US and Canada. He has participated in many
varied areas of THFHS, serving on the Finance, Genealogy, and
Publications Committees. Leroy was a co-editor and compiler of the
1995 Additions & Revisions to History and Genealogy of the Hubbell
Family and a contributor to the Society Annual. He is
recognized and respected as a careful and accurate researcher of
Hubbell/Hubble family history. He also has the distinction of
being a member who has attended all twelve Hubbell/Hubble Family
Biennial Reunions. THFHS salutes Leroy as a tireless supporter of
the family and the Society.
The Hubbell Family Historical Society congratulates
these deserving inductees to the Hubbell Hall of Fame.

Robert Lamson Hubbell is honored as an active and early member of The Hubbell Family Historical Society. Robert joined this organization in 1983 just two years after its founding.
He was a Patron of the 1980 History & Genealogy of the Hubbell Family.
From 1987-1991, Robert was President and Chairman of THFHS Board of Directors and was instrumental in helping that body cope with expanding Society activities.
He later promoted an increase in the number of directors, and then divided them into classes in an effort to secure a wide geographical representation.
As the third President of THFHS, Robert continued to emphasize leadership; his government background gave a crisp and efficient approach to the directors' meetings as well as the general membership meetings at the Society's biennial reunions.
Robert furnished many interesting items to the Society's Annual over the years.
He wrote so well that it was a logical step for him to take over as editor in 1991. He later became the editor of the Society's newsletter
Family Notes.
Because of the many important and varied contributions that Robert Lamson Hubbell brought to the growth and development of THFHS, the Society is proud to induct him into the Hall of Fame.

2001 INDUCTEES ~
At the Kenai, Alaska Reunion of The
Hubbell Family Historical Society on Saturday evening, June 23, 2001,
following the banquet, the prestigious Hubbell Hall of Fame awards were
announced. The following members were inducted into the Hubbell Hall of
Fame: Ernest Hubbell and four deceased honorees. President Donald C.
Hubbell, Clifton H. Hubbell, R. Leroy Hubble, Harvey Hubbell, IV, and
Maureen Rischard, Chairwoman of the Hall of Fame Committee, participated
in the reading of the individual résumés engraved on each plaque. The
2001 Hubbell Hall of Fame inductees are: Ernest Hubbell, Phyllis
Hubbell Holbrook, Beryl Catherine (Kirkwood) Hubbell, Rosemary Hubbell
Wirkus, and George Kawaa Hubbell, Jr.
Ernest Hubbell:
Ernest was elected as the first President of The Hubbell Family
Historical Society at the inaugural meeting at the "Hubbell
House" in Mantorville, MN, in September 1981. As senior partner of
the law firm of Hubbell, Sawyer, Peak, & O’Neal, Ernest incorporated
the Society as a not-for-profit family genealogical society in the State
of Missouri on March 5, 1982. His law firm drew up the Society by-laws,
and he personally provided both legal and professional advice that
established the foundation for the Society’s future success. Ernest was
responsible for recruiting many of the original membership, and with his
secretary, Sandra Sue McDonald, devoted many hours maintaining the Society’s
original membership records. Ernest has been a "Proud to Be a
Hubbell-Hubble" since 1988.
Phyllis Hubbell Holbrook, 1915-1984:
Phyllis was an early supporter in the development of the 1980 History
& Genealogy of the Hubbell Family book. Starting in 1969, she
devoted many years assisting Harold B. Hubbell in researching family
genealogies. Through her interest in the Hubbell family genealogy, she
contacted Hubbell families throughout the west. This research work
contributed significantly to the publication of the 1980 History &
Genealogy. She also assisted Donald S. Hubbell, Sr. in raising funds
for the publication of the book. She authored the chapter on Minnesota
Hubbells and provided research on Oregon Hubbells for the Hubbell
Pioneers book. She was an early promoter for the development of the Family
Fare cookbook that was later revived by President R. Leroy Hubble
after her death. At the 1981 Mantorville organizational meeting, she was
elected to the first Board of Directors, and was the Society’s first
Corresponding Secretary.
Beryl Catherine (Kirkwood) Hubbell,
1929-1994: Beryl, born in Glasgow, Scotland,
became a "Hubbell By Choice" having married Glen A. Hubbell of
Thamesville, Ontario, Canada. She and Glen attended the inaugural meeting
of the Society at "Hubbell House" in Mantorville, MN, in 1981,
and became a member of the first Board of Directors. It was a position she
held for six years. Beryl served a term as Vice-President, Corresponding
Secretary, and was a member of the Executive Committee under two
Presidents. She was an original member of the Genealogy Committee in 1983,
and prepared a chapter for the Hubbell Pioneers book with sections
on southwestern, central, and eastern Ontario. She also worked closely
with her daughter, Catherine Welsman, and daughter-in-law, Betty (Mrs.
Allan A.) Hubbell in preparation and editing the Family Fare cookbook.
Beryl and Glen were patrons of the 1980 History & Genealogy.
She played a leading role in defining the Canadian Nehemiah Hubbell/Hubble
families, and her research work was a major contribution to the 1995 Additions
& Revisions to History & Genealogy of the Hubbell Family.
Rosemary Hubbell Wirkus, 1924-1995:
Rosemary attended the inaugural meeting of the Society at "Hubbell
House" in 1981. She was a member of the first Board of Directors, and
served until 1989. She also served as Recording Secretary at the inaugural
meeting, and held that office until 1985. She and husband Leonard were
patrons of the 1980 History & Genealogy. She wrote about her
grandparents, portrait painter, Henry Salem Hubbell, and children’s
poet, Rose Strong Hubbell. Rosemary gave permission for the use of the
1906 painting by her grandfather, "Tea on the Lawn, Chateau de
Rozieres," for the cover of the Family Fare cookbook. Shortly
before her death, Rosemary contributed a large amount of memorabilia
relating to her Hubbell antecedents, including Civil War items to Hubbell
Center in Des Moines, IA. These pieces became the initial Wirkus Family
Collection at Hubbell Center, and daughter Kathryn continues to add to the
collection.
George Kawaa Hubbell, Jr., 1913-1998: George
Kawaa brought a new dimension to the Hubbell Family-- the Hawaiian branch.
He and his wife, Victoria, attended their first biennial meeting in
Fairfield, CT, in 1983. At that time, he noted that it was the first time
the Hawaiian Hubbells had met their mainland "cousins" since his
ancestor, Josiah Benjamin Hubbell, left Bridgeport, CT, in the 1800s. He
and Victoria continued to attend each of the following meetings with one
of their children, or a grandchild, until poor health prevented them from
traveling. George and brother William furnished new information on the
Hawaiian Hubbell descendants of Josiah Hubbell for the 1980 History
& Genealogy. His family provided new and updated information on
the Hawaiian family genealogy to the Society for several years afterward.
The large and enthusiastic gathering for the 1991 Biennial Reunion in
Honolulu, Hawaii, was in large measure due to his desire to have his
mainland "cousins" meet the Hawaiian Hubbells, and share in the
Hawaiian culture.

1999 INDUCTEES ~
 At
the 9th Reunion in Springfield, Missouri, Donald Sidney Hubbell and
Harold Beresford Hubbell, Jr. were inducted into The Hubbell Family
Historical Society Hall of Fame as the first inductees. Beautiful, framed
citations were presented to James M. Hubbell and Susan Beth Hubbell
Crihfield, the grandchildren of the late Donald; and to Harold at the
banquet on June 12, 1999.
Copies of the citations have been placed in Hubbell
Center, and photos of the two men are also planned for Hubbell Center.
These men have done so much for the Society; they are the two most
responsible for the organization of the Society by arranging the gathering
at the Hubbell House in Mantorville, Minnesota, on September 15, 1981,
when the Society was founded.
Harold has been the main driving force
of the Society since its inception. From 1981 until 1990, he served as
treasurer, editor of the Annual and Family Notes, and family
genealogist simultaneously. Harold Collaborated with Donald Sidney Hubbell
in compiling, editing, and publishing The History and Genealogy of the
Hubbell Family, a monumental book which has been reprinted by the
Society. He was also the compiler and co-editor of the Additions and
Revisions to the first publication.
In addition to helping to found THFHS and to publish
the Hubbell History, Donald remained an active member until his
death in 1988. He saw his dream of a Hubbell story book materialize-- Hubbell
Pioneers. He recruited the writers, compiled, and edited the book,
which features a Hubbell story from every state of the United States, and
Canada.
