THFHS Information
The mission of The Hubbell
Family Historical Society is to research the genealogy, preserve the history,
recognize the achievements, and promote fellowship for the descendants of
Richard Hubball, the immigrant.
Founded in 1981, THE HUBBELL FAMILY
HISTORICAL SOCIETY is an organization of the descendants of Richard Hubball
(Hubbell, Hubble, Hubbel, Hubel, Huble) in North America. Richard settled in
Connecticut from Rock, Worcestershire, England in the early 1600's. We are
descended from this single ancestor.
THFHS holds biennial reunions at locations in
the U.S. and Canada where Hubbells have made a significant impact. Gatherings
have been held in New England, California, Hawaii, Ontario, and the Hubbell
Trading Post in Arizona. Our June 1999 reunion was in Springfield, Missouri,
where a plaque was placed by the family beneath the scale model of the Hubble
Space Telescope on the town square of Marshfield, Missouri-- Edwin Powell
Hubble's hometown. The 2001 reunion was held in Kenai, Alaska, which drew 100
attendees from across the U.S. THFHS members got a taste of southern hospitality
and honored the memory of American Literature scholar Jay B. Hubbell at our 2003
reunion in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Our twelfth reunion was held in 2005 at
Albuquerque, New Mexico, with a visit to the Hubbell House, the ancestral home
of James L. Hubbell and Julianna-Gutierrez Hubbell, currently undergoing
restoration as a living history museum.
The reunions give us a good way to “see the
USA” and keep in touch with family at once. Details on the next reunion in
Michigan will be posted at the Biennial Reunions Page
when they become available. We look forward to you joining us at
our next biennial!
Twice now, family members have traveled to
where our immigrant ancestor lived in Rock, Worcestershire, England, to seek our
historical roots. We have met as a family for the launching of the Hubble
telescope, with full press coverage. THFHS regularly holds other historic
meetings as well, and has erected plaques commemorating Hubbells and their
achievements at various locations.
Our publications include the 1995 edition of
Additions & Revisions to History & Genealogy of the Hubbell Family;
A Military History of the Hubbell Family in
North America; our bi-annual print newsletter, Family Notes;
and the Annual, which features genealogy and historical articles.
Members reside in the US, Canada, and in the UK. Over one third of our members
are now online, and this new communication tool has brought the family even
closer.
Hubbell Center
Library~Museum~Archive, located in Des Moines, IA, houses books,
documents, and artifacts of the Hubbells and related families. Visits by family
members and others are encouraged. Contact Pat Dawson the librarian/curator via
center@hubbell.org
if you wish to have her search the records there for information relevant to a
particular Hubbell ancestor. The Genealogy Committee Chair is Hilbert R. Hubble,
and you may contact him at
genealogy@hubbell.org
with information regarding your Hubbell roots.
The
Hubbell Family Scholarship Fund awarded its first two
scholarships in 1996, and has increased the amount and number of scholarships,
thanks to the generosity of THFHS members. Scholarships are awarded to members
or their children and grandchildren, who have attended at least one year of
undergraduate study at an accredited college.
The
Nehemiah Hubble Family Heritage Association, our Canadian affiliate, was founded in 1950 to honour the memory of a British patriot or loyalist who traveled to Rawdon Township, Hastings County, Ontario to establish a new home for his family as a result of the Revolutionary War.
